In my last post, I wrote about my lucky matches in FA Cup but it is not the last.. I think this season I am very lucky with my fixtures.
I even could not believe what we achieved until the cup rose on my arms. That was another
ineffable moment for WestBrom fans.
We are over the moon and going back home with another glory, cup, first Euro Cup. Now lets take a look at the details.
Our first draw was against Teplice. We are sorry for Teplice but we will never hold back beating any team.
After we have passed Teplice easily with 5-0 and 2-1 we were ready for the group matches. We were in Group B with Levski, Basel, and HSV. The most difficult team against us would be HSV. I was pretty sure I would qualify from Group B
And we got what we deserve and qualified for the next step with 5 wins and 1 lost.
After the group matches, we met FC Kobenhavn at Euro Cup First Knock out. It was the first difficult match against but thanks to my attacking power that we passed them too. On the next step FC Twente was the team waiting for us and we won with the matches that won away.
Until this step we were winning but I am not happy with the performances indeed. I was afraid to match with a upper class team and the day came. In the quarter final the opposite was Inter.
Although Inter was better side on the field, Simon Cox found one goal and we could keep the score. At the second leg, we were at the Guiseppe Meazza. This sensational stadium has a special atmosphere and it is a big moment for us and it was normal that we change our tactics a little bit.
I applied 4-5-1 tactics sometimes against upper class team and so I decided to use the same tactic against Inter too. In this tactic, the most important point is the philosphy. We are playing with "counter attack" philosophy. So in this philosophy, Besides, I am using reverse-foot on the wings. Graham Dorrans on the left, Adam Johnson on the right. Defensive Midfield position is one another strategic position on this tactic and I am happy that I have one of the best DM, Youssuf Mulumbu.
As a result, we kept the win that we grabbed home and Inter could not find goal against us.. So, if you can not score you are eliminated.. We passed Inter with 0-0 second leg match.
After Inter, we met Leverkusen. Leverkusen is equivalent to us and this time I turned my old tactic: 4-2-3-1.
Leverkusen was easier team than I expected. Finally we were at the final and what a destiny that, we met a familiar team: Arsenal :)
This season we met 2 times and we lost both of them with 3-0 and 3-2. Now it is time for revenge :)
I decided not to change my tactics and I asked my players to play without any pressure. It was a big success for us even if we could not win the final. I think this prematch team talk boosted the team motivation and we made a little suprise for Arsenal. I am sure that they were not expecting such a defeat.. Man of the match was Shane Long and he deserved totally with every second he played. Shane Long scored 3 goals against Arsenal and we took what we want.
