After a busy winter transfer period, we were ready for the second half. I believed in my new transfers that they will fit the squad and see the impact immediately. But the first two matches woke me up from a dream and I came across with the reality. While I was trying to adapt Munoz and Emerson to the squad, I could not realize the squad harmony was breaking.
Two defeat in a row increased some voices at the club. Especially 8 goals at back of goalie in two matches made me think if I did something wrong.
Newcastle: 4- 2: Southampton
Only thing good at Soton side was Kweuke's solid game and his two goals but what a pity we could not handle Newcastle attackers. We have seen 4 goals in our nets. We were not good at finishing because when you look at the stats, you see that Newcastle had 22 shots while we had 17 but Newcastle's shots on target is 8, ours is 7.
Newcastle scored 4 goals from this 8 shots. Besides, other 4 shots hit the woodwork. So lady luck was with us. It could be a disaster for us if some of the woodwork found the net.
I expressed my disappointment and upset at the backroom and made the players feel what I felt. Sometimes, being rough against players in such kind of these matches motivates the players. I took this opportunity and told them what I feel.
Southampton:1- 4: Tottenham
Another 4 goals in our nets and devastated fans at the St. Mary's stadium. Tottenham was the superior side and we could not even hit back against the attacks. Douglas Costa was the man of the match and we could not handle him. This result was just a big disappointment for me and the team. The first match at the first half of the season was very exciting match. We lost against the Spurs 3-2 but we struggled at least. But this time it was a heavy defeat for Soton. I did not expect such a heavy defeat.
To be honest, I could not know how to treat. I arranged a team meeting and I warned them about these two heavy defeats.
My assistant manager reported me about lack of match training for defensive positioning. These two matches showed that we gave possessions very easily and we had to focus on defensive positioning. For next three weeks, I arranged default focus as defensive positioning at match training.
Second Half of the Fixture:
Second half of the season showed how long way we had to go. Because we all lost big matches against Manchester City (2-1), Arsenal (4-2), Manchester United (2-1) We could have only one draw against Chelsea (3-3)
However, I am very happy with the result at the end of the season. Because, as you remember I have changed the season expectations to Euro Cup challenge and now I am proud to see Southampton to be qualified for the Euro Cup.
League Table:
We have completed league at 6th position. When you look at the past positions table below, we were better at the first half of the season but at second half, we could not keep our position and found ourselves at 6th position but however it was enough for Euro Cup.
Note: It would be better if it was possible choose more than 2 teams at this table. You can benchmark only 2 teams. Besides, it would be perfect to benchmark the same team according to the previous seasons. maybe Sigames hear this :)
